About 80% of people who catch West Nile Virus have no symptoms at all. Those who do develop West Nile Fever usually only get flu like symptoms, and may also get skin rashes. But in less than 1%, the virus can invade the brain, spinal cord and surrounding tissues, causing encephalitis and meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, convulsions or even death. West Nile Virus exists in horse wild and domestic birds and is spread by mosquitoes. So avoiding mosquito bites is the best way not to get West Nile Virus, along with many other nasties.
