The Flying Scotsman encourages development of technical, analytical, problem solving, and engineering skills.Based off Sir Nigel Gresley’s Flying Scotsman (originally numbered 1472), The Flying Scotsman was built in Doncaster and became the first locomotive to be used on the new London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). The Flying Scotsman is well known for being the first ever non-stop London to Edinburgh service on 1st May 1928. Staff achieved this feat by using the newly built corridor to rotate staff so new staff could take over its operation while still keeping the train moving. It is the first locomotive to reach 100 MPH. This feat was achieved in 1934.While in Australia The Flying Scotsman completed a 442 mile no stop run and achieved a new record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive.
