Although the bacteria were identified over 100 years ago. It took until the late 1970's and Australian pathologist Robin Warren with Australian gastroenterologist Barry Marshall to make the link between the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and gastro-intestinal ulcers. Barry Marshall is famous for swallowing a sample of the bacteria to prove the link. Stress was believed to be the major cause of ulcers prior to this discovery.
Only a small number of people with Helicobacter develop ulcers, but nearly all ulcer sufferers are infected with the bacteria. Symptoms include burning pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, burping and loss of appetite. In Australia half of the population will be infected with the bacteria by age 50. Giant Microbe Ulcers aren't painful, and plaiting their flagellate is great stress relief!
Giant Microbes make excellent teaching aids as they assist students to develop an understanding of biology while taking a fun, hands on approach.
