Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes) travel through the body's blood vessels picking up oxygen in the lungs and delivering it to cells throughout the body. They also transport carbon dioxide back to the lungs for removal from the body through breathing. The haemoglobin molecule in red blood cells is specially designed for oxygen transport. Each Haemoglobin molecule has four iron atoms, each of these can pick up four oxygen molecules. It is the iron that gives red blood cells their colour.
Surgery, serious injury and some illnesses can require red blood cell replacement by transfusion. So if you know someone who needs a transfusion, roll up your sleeves and donate blood, but give them a Giant Microbe Red Blood Cell to cheer them up as well! Ideal as distraction and demonstration aids when children are undergoing treatment.
Giant Microbes also make excellent teaching aids as they assist students to develop an understanding of biology while taking a fun, hands on approach. Why not team up Red Blood Cell with Platelet and White Blood Cell as a set?
Not for children under three years of age as parts may dislodge and become a choking hazard.
Red Blood Cell is 115mm high, 120mm wide and 40mm thick, made of red (obviously!) medium pile polyester plush with polyester filling and plastic eyes.
