This highly contagious virus attacks the central nervous system causing fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting and stiffness in the neck and pain in the limbs. In severe cases it can cause permanent paralysis usually in the legs and even more rare is paralysis of breathing muscles. Children under five years of age are the most susceptible. A world wide campaign to eradicate Polio through vaccination has been very successful. There are only three countries where Polio remains at significant infection rates.
