Meningitis affects the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord – which means it’s pretty serious. Carried by a number of bacteria and viruses, meningitis can cause headaches, a stiff neck and sensitivity to light and sound. A deadly type of meningitis, known as meningococcal, can result in red or purple rashes on the body; sometimes amputation of limbs is required. Luckily, vaccinations have been developed to provide protection against some forms of meningitis. Definitely not a disease you want to catch, unless you want a massive pain in the neck!
