Human papillomavirus (HPV) is an extensive virus with over 100 strains that affect humans. Different HPV strains have a range of different effects from harmless warts to life-threatening cervical cancers. Treatments such as ointments and freezing with liquid nitrogen can remove warts, however, the HPV infection still remains. Although a vaccine is now available to protect against infection of some strains, regular Pap tests are also recommended to ensure infections are treated promptly.
