Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) selectively infects cells in the immune system (CD4+ cells).
The terms HIV and AIDS are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. If the immune system is sufficiently damaged, AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) will result. Simple illnesses, like a cold, can then have devastating results. There is currently no vaccine or cure for HIV.
