Euglenas are such overachievers. They can consume food AND photosynthesise!
Euglena gracilis are water-dwelling protists who are a great help in a biological laboratory. They are commonly used as an experimental model to test scientific theories on. It took many years for these microbes to be classified properly as they have characteristics of both plants and animals. It was only after a whole new Kingdom was added to the classification system, that they could be appropriately named.
Giant Microbes make excellent teaching aids as they assist students to develop an understanding of biology while taking a fun, hands on approach. No dissection required here!
