Infections caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae can cause a variety of illnesses depending of which part of the body is affected. Ear ache is caused by infection of the middle ear, pneumonia from an infection in the lungs and meningitis results from infection in the central nervous system. Children under two and over 85 years of age are at the highest risk of infection from Streptococcus pneumoniae. The symptoms of an ear ache can include pain in the ear, hearing loss, fever, nausea and vomiting.
