This is a model of the original 67 metre tall pendulum that Jean Bernard Leon Foucault suspended from the Paris' Pantheon in 1851. The original pendulum was the first of his kind that demonstrated the rotation of the Earth. There was a large version of this pendulum hanging in the Questacon foyer, in Canberra, for over 15 years.
Start the pendulum off and watch as the metal pointer creates beautiful Lissajous patterns in the sand. The extremely fine sand in the base creates a small amount of friction, thus allowing the pendulum to swing for over five minutes. This swinging action from the pendulum creates ever changing geometric patterns in the sand. The patterns get bigger then smaller then bigger again as the arc of the pendulum changes. The lovely patterns are drawn and redrawn in the sand.
Some assembly of the pendulum is required. Simply follow the enclosed instructions to join the five plastic parts together and add the fine sand to the base (included).
