Luitprand, an eighth century French monk, was the first person to use an hourglass to measure time. Although it is known as an ‘hourglass’, the times measured varied between 15 minutes to one hour. Most hourglasses did not use sand, rather the most accurate devices used powdered marble, tin and lead oxides and pulverised burnt eggshells.
This beautiful hourglass is made of quality glass with coloured black sand keeping time as it falls from one vessel to the other. It measures 30 minutes making it perfect for timing small tasks while also bringing some ancient charm to your home.
